What is Adrenal Fatigue?
The adrenal glands are the command center of your body. They produce hormones which regulate your metabolism, level of energy, immune system, blood pressure and mood.
The adrenals produce a number of hormones in response to physical and emotional triggers. For example, cortisol helps you deal with stress and regulates inflammation, adrenaline sets in motion your fight or flight response, and aldosterone regulates your blood pressure.
Overworking your adrenals can deplete them over time. Exhausted adrenals are then less able to produce these hormones in the right quantities or at the right times. The outcome is Adrenal Fatigue, which has many symptoms, and at the extreme can lead to burnout.
Symptoms can be very disruptive and vary as adrenal fatigue deepens, they include:
-
Fatigue: Persistent tiredness which is not relieved by sleep, including chronic fatigue syndrome.
-
Lethargy: Lack of energy and motivation.
-
Decreased immune response: Getting sick more frequently, especially with respiratory issues, and taking longer to recover.
-
Erratic sugar levels: Including reactive hypoglycemia (low sugar levels).
-
Mental: Anxiety and mild depression.
-
Decreased productivity: Brain fog and difficulty concentrating.
-
Insomnia: Hard to fall asleep, tired during the day and getting a second wind at night while having the 'wired but tired' feeling.
-
Blood pressure: Can be both high or low at different stages, typically you get dizzy if you stand up too quickly.
-
Worsened inflammatory conditions: Such as asthma, allergies, rhinitis, and inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS).
